Unrelenting Pakistani Aggression
On the night of May 3-4, 2025, Pakistan violated the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) for the 10th consecutive day, marking the most intense night of skirmishes since the spree began post the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. Pakistani troops initiated unprovoked small-arms fire across multiple sectors, including Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, Mendhar, Naushera, and Akhnoor in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army responded with prompt and proportionate retaliation, targeting Pakistani posts to neutralize the threat. This escalation, amid heightened tensions, reflects Pakistan’s attempt to destabilize the region while India pursues justice for the 26 civilian deaths in Pahalgam.

Context of the Conflict
The ceasefire violations follow the Pahalgam attack, linked by the National Investigation Agency to Pakistan’s ISI and Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives like Hashim Musa. Pakistan’s firing, which began April 24, has targeted over 65 Indian posts, with reports suggesting attempts to facilitate terrorist infiltrations under cover of shelling. The Indian Army’s robust response has caused visible damage to Pakistani bunkers, per intelligence sources. Despite a 2021 ceasefire reaffirmation, Pakistan’s actions, including deploying heavy weaponry like M110 artillery in Leepa Valley, indicate a deliberate provocation, further strained by India’s diplomatic measures like suspending the Indus Water Treaty.

India’s Strategic Response
The Indian Army, backed by over 10,000 troops, drones, and thermal imaging, has intensified LoC surveillance to thwart infiltrations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s grant of operational freedom has empowered forces to respond decisively, with no Indian casualties reported on May 3-4. The Army demolished homes of suspected Pahalgam attack aides in Pulwama and Kulgam, signaling a zero-tolerance policy. Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated that no terrorist would be spared, bolstering the manhunt for Musa and others.

Regional and Global Stakes
The UN and U.S. have urged restraint, but Pakistan’s denials of involvement and claims of a “neutral probe” have found little traction, except from China. India’s briefings to G20 and Gulf nations underscore its intent to isolate Pakistan diplomatically. As ceasefire violations persist, India’s calibrated military response aims to deter further aggression while avoiding full-scale war, though the risk of escalation looms large.
