Tamil Nadu News: At least 38 people died and over 60 were hospitalised after a massive crowd caused a stampede at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The rally was led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, chief of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Many attendees, including children and women, collapsed due to overcrowding. Vijay stopped his speech when people began fainting and tried to help by giving water and arranging ambulances. The police and medical teams worked urgently to assist the injured.

Crowd Exceeded Allowed Limit

The police had allowed only 10,000 people at the rally, but the crowd swelled to 30,000–35,000. Vijay arrived six hours late, which added to the chaos. As he started speaking, the crowd pushed toward the stage, broke barricades, and caused the stampede. Many workers fainted, and ambulances struggled to reach those in need.

Officials and Leaders React After Stampede

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed condolences. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin sent ministers and officials to assist and will visit Karur at 1 AM. BJP and AIADMK leaders criticized the state government and police for failing to ensure safety and urged immediate compensation for the victims’ families. Vijay left for Chennai without visiting the hospitals or speaking to the media. Heartbreaking scenes emerged from hospitals, with families waiting anxiously for news of their loved ones.

Vijay’s Rallies Have Caused Controversy

Vijay’s rallies have often drawn large crowds and controversy. He has criticized both DMK and BJP governments and promised to be an alternative to them. The recent stampede highlights the risks of overcrowding at his political events and raises questions about event management and safety measures.
