Punjab: The untimely death of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Gurpreet Gogi has left Punjab shocked. Late Friday night, Gogi, the MLA for Ludhiana West, reportedly sustained fatal head injuries after allegedly accidentally shooting himself. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jaskaran Singh Teja, the incident occurred in Gogis room, where family members heard a gunshot and found him lying in a pool of blood. He was shifted to DMC Hospital, and upon arrival, the doctors had pronounced him brought dead.Self shot accidentally: Family tellsDCP Jaskaran Singh Teja said, According to family members, he [Gurpreet Gogi] has shot himself accidentally, and some bullet injuries on the head of him were found. It will come that what killed the person. It will get revealed after receiving post-mortem reports. Gurpreets body was kept at DMC mortuary for further probing.Who is Gurpreet GogiGurpreet Gogi was a political stalwart who had recently got into the Aam Aadmi Party in 2022, before elections came to Punjab for its assembly. He had made his foray into politics as an MLA from Vidhan Sabha after defeating Bharat Bhushan Ashu, two-time MLA and former cabinet minister. Gogi also had three successive terms as a municipal councillor from Ward 76 of Ludhiana West between 2007 and 2022.Before joining AAP, he was a very important member of the Congress party, heading the District Congress Committee (Urban) from 2014 to 2019. Additionally, he acted as the chairman of the Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation (PSIEC) from 2019 to 2022 during the Congress government.A scandalous political careerThis is how Gogi hogged the headlines in August 2024 when he ordered the removal of the foundation stone of the ₹650 crore pipeline project under the rejuvenation initiative of the Buddha Nullah. Gogi had been frustrated by the slow progress the project was making. Impatience with inefficiency and poor performance again came into play.Whereas the family puts a question of accident into shooting, circumstances under which Gogi was shot are still obscure.
