Early-Morning Raid at Abhishek Banerjee's Home Sparks Political Storm; Mamata Rushes to the Spot (X@ANI)
Kolkata: There was a stir in the politics of West Bengal in the early hours of Saturday when a team of police along with central security forces reached the Kalighat residence of Trinamool Congress National General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee in Kolkata. This police action started between 2:30 and 3 in the morning and continued for several hours. It was told that the team had come in search of Sumit Roy, personal aide of Abhishek Banerjee in a case. As soon as the news of the action was received, TMC chief Mamata Banerjee also reached the spot, after which the entire incident took a political colour.
According to sources, a joint team of West Medinipur Police and Kolkata Police had reached Abhishek Banerjee's residence in connection with an investigation. Officials say they were looking for Sumit Roy, whose name has come up in a case related to alleged extortion. The police team entered the premises and searched many parts and also interrogated the people present there.
According to media reports, when the police team reached the residence, the security personnel deployed there first tried to stop them. After this, a situation of debate and tension continued for some time. Later the police team went inside the premises and started the search operation. Due to this incident, a lot of commotion was seen in the area late at night.
As soon as the information about the action reached Mamata Banerjee, she immediately reached her nephew's house. According to eyewitnesses, he talked to police officers and got information about the action. After Mamata's presence, the matter was not limited to police investigation only but became a subject of political debate.
In recent times, Abhishek Banerjee has appeared before the investigating agencies regarding many cases. A few days ago, he was interrogated by CID for more than five hours in the alleged signature dispute case. Apart from this, notices have also been issued to him by CID and other agencies in different cases.
These days, the case of alleged 'signature forgery' i.e. signature forgery is also in the headlines in West Bengal. Investigative agencies are trying to find out whether the signatures of some MLAs were allegedly misused. Abhishek Banerjee and other leaders have been called for questioning in this case. However, whether Saturday's action is directly related to this case or not, there is no official confirmation yet.
Trinamool Congress leaders have termed this entire action a political vendetta. The party alleges that investigative agencies are being used under opposition pressure. On the other hand, the investigating agencies say that they are fulfilling their responsibilities under the law and the action is completely a part of the investigation process.
Analysts believe that this development can give rise to a new debate in West Bengal, which is already facing political tension after the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Various ongoing investigations against Abhishek Banerjee, continuous summons and now the search at his residence have further heated up the politics of the state. The round of allegations and counter-allegations between the ruling TMC and the opposition regarding this matter is likely to intensify in the coming days.
