Air India Flight Crash: The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking an independent and impartial investigation into the Air India Flight AI171 crash, which tragically claimed the lives of 260 people. The court issued notices to the central government and relevant authorities seeking their responses.

The petition, filed by the NGO Safety Matters Foundation, raises serious questions about the preliminary investigation report issued by the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The petitioner alleges that the report conceals material facts and that the investigation process violates the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) Rules, 2017.

Questions raised on the preliminary report

The petition alleges that the preliminary report released by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on July 12th is misleading and incomplete. While the report attributes the accident to pilot error, the petitioners argue that this conclusion was hastily drawn and ignored underlying technical flaws and systemic failures.

Testimony of the only surviving passenger

The petition also alleges that the testimony of Vijaykumar Ramesh, the sole surviving passenger of the accident, was not even included in the report. Ramesh, 40, is a businessman and resident of Leicester, UK. The petitioner states that his testimony could have revealed several important facts but was deliberately ignored.

Accident details

This tragic accident occurred on June 12th when Air India Flight AI171, traveling from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff. The aircraft was a Boeing 787-8. The accident killed 230 passengers, 12 crew members, and several people on the ground. Only one person survived.

Supreme Court Flags Flaws In Crash Investigation

The Supreme Court agreed to hear the petition and issued notices to the central government, the Ministry of Civil Aviation, and other relevant entities. The court stated that given the seriousness of the matter, it is essential that all facts be investigated with transparency.

Demand for fair investigation

The Safety Matters Foundation argues that simply blaming the pilot or crew is insufficient in such horrific accidents. They demand an independent, impartial, and expeditious investigation, arguing that this will not only reveal the truth but also enable corrective measures to be taken to prevent such incidents in the future. Following this petition, pressure appears to be mounting on the Central Government and the Aviation Ministry to conduct a transparent investigation.
