New Delhi: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu made a major announcement on Saturday. He stated that any family in the state that now has a third child will receive 30,000 rupees from the government. Furthermore, if a fourth child is born, the family will receive 40,000 rupees. He made this announcement during a public meeting in Narasannapeta, located in the Srikakulam district.

In March 2025, Naidu had informed the Legislative Assembly that the government was considering providing 25,000 rupees to couples who had a second child. In other words, the initial proposal was to provide financial assistance only for the second child. However, State Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav subsequently clarified that the government had revised its decision, and this benefit would now be extended to the third and fourth children as well.

What did Chandrababu Naidu say?

On Saturday, during the 'Swarna Andhra–Swachh Andhra' program in Narasannapeta, Chief Minister Naidu personally announced this from the podium. He stated, "I have taken a new decision. Upon the birth of a third child, 30,000 rupees will be provided immediately; for a fourth child, 40,000 rupees will be given. Is this not a sound decision?" Naidu also mentioned that full details regarding this policy would be released within a month.

Why is this being done?

Chief Minister Naidu explains that the birth rate in Andhra Pradesh has been consistently declining. Globally, it is accepted that the population of any state or country remains stable when, on average, every woman gives birth to 2.1 children.

Chief Minister Naidu warned that if this rate were to fall any further, it would have an adverse impact on the state's economy. He also noted that, currently, many couples prefer to have only one child; this trend is attributed to their increased income and the belief that a single child is sufficient. Some couples opt for a second child only if their firstborn is not a son. Consequently, this mindset is hindering population growth. Chief Minister Naidu stated that many people believe children are a burden, but this is a misconception. Children are, in fact, an 'asset'—meaning they are beneficial to both the country and the family. Naidu asserted that he would prove this to be true.
