New Delhi: Preparations are underway across the country for a Bharat Bandh on February 12. This strike has been called by central trade unions and farmers' organizations. The protest is being carried out in protest against the new labor codes and the India-US trade deal. Farmers say this agreement could harm domestic agriculture.

Why is there a Bharat Bandh on February 12?

This nationwide protest has been organized by a joint platform of 10 central trade unions, including INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, and UTUC. The unions say that the four labor codes weaken workers' rights, reduce job security, and make it easier to hire or fire employees. The unions also expressed concern over privatization, stagnant wages, and a lack of social security.

The organizations are demanding the withdrawal of the draft Seed Bill, the Electricity Amendment Bill, and the SHANTI Act. They are also demanding the restoration of MGNREGA and the repeal of the Viksit Bharat - Guarantee for Employment and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Act 2025. The Bharat Bandh has received support from the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and the All India Kisan Sabha.

What will be closed?

The strike may affect public sector banks, transportation, and government services in several states. Schools and colleges may also be closed in some areas. Branch services may be affected due to the participation of bank employees, although online banking and ATM services may remain operational.

Public transport and local markets are also expected to be disrupted or closed. Emergency services, such as hospitals and ambulances, are expected to operate normally. Airports and other services will remain operational, but traffic delays may occur.
