Bihar News: The Patna Sessions Court of Bihar has sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping his sister-in-law under false pretenses. The accused, Rajneesh Kumar Pandey, was convicted of luring his sister-in-law into a physical relationship with a false promise of marriage, which led to her pregnancy. The court also imposed a fine of ₹15,000 on the convicted man, with an additional two-and-a-half years of imprisonment if the fine is not paid.

Court’s Verdict and Additional Penalty

Patna District and Additional Sessions Judge (First) Sangam Singh pronounced the sentence on Tuesday, holding Pandey guilty under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Alongside the imprisonment and fine, the court directed the District Legal Services Authority, Patna, to provide compensation to the victim.

Details of the Case

The case dates back to 2008 when the victim filed a complaint against Pandey, a resident of Hasuara village in the Barh police station area of Patna district. According to Additional Public Prosecutor Arvind Kumar Sinha, the accused developed a physical relationship with his sister-in-law by promising marriage. However, when the victim became pregnant, he refused to take responsibility, prompting her to seek legal recourse.

After thorough investigation, the case was brought to the Patna Sessions Court, where the guilty verdict was delivered. The court acknowledged the victim’s long wait for justice, sending the accused to rigorous imprisonment and ordering monetary compensation for her ordeal.

Compensation and Legal Support for the Victim

In addition to the prison sentence, the court has instructed the District Legal Services Authority to ensure that the victim receives adequate compensation for the trauma she endured. This directive underscores the judiciary's focus on providing support to victims of such crimes.
