The Calcutta High Court on Monday canceled over 24,000 job appointments under West Bengal teacher recruitment in a 2016 job scam. The recruitment panel for the school teachers constituted by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSCC) has been dismissed.

During the hearing, the court asked the teachers to give back the salaries that they have drawn to date within the next four days. The decision was announced by a division bench comprising Justices Debangsu Basak and Md Shabbar Rashidi said that school teachers were illegally recruited based on blank OMR sheets. The district magistrate has been tasked with collecting money from these teachers.

The bench has also directed the re-evaluation of over 23 lakh OMR sheets of the recruitment entrance exam that had been conducted. Apart from this, the bench has directed the CBI to investigate the case and submit the report within the next three months. In addition to this, the WBSSC has been asked to initiate the new recruitment process for the 24,000 vacant posts.

It is worth to be noted that judgment was reserved with the court since the hearing on March 20. In 2022, the investigation agency arrested former Bengal Education minister Partha Chatterjee 2022 in connection with the scam.
