Senior Nationalist Congress Party leader Chhagan Bhujbal was sworn in as a cabinet minister in Maharashtra’s Mahayuti government at Mumbai’s Raj Bhavan, marking a significant expansion of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s cabinet. The oath, administered by Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, signals a strategic move to strengthen the coalition ahead of civic polls.

A Veteran’s Comeback
Bhujbal, a 77-year-old OBC leader from Yeola, Nashik, rejoined the cabinet after his exclusion in December 2024 sparked controversy. His induction fills the vacancy left by NCP’s Dhananjay Munde, who resigned in March 2025 amid a murder case involving his aide. Bhujbal, a former deputy chief minister, is likely to take charge of the Food and Civil Supplies portfolio, leveraging his decades-long political experience to address key issues like OBC welfare.

Strengthening Mahayuti Unity
The swearing-in, attended by Fadnavis and Deputy CMs Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, aims to mend internal NCP rifts. Bhujbal’s earlier exclusion led to public discontent, with the leader blaming Ajit Pawar for prioritizing others, including over his son Pankaj’s council seat. His inclusion now, ahead of local body elections, is seen as a nod to his influence among OBC voters, crucial for the coalition’s electoral prospects.

Political and Social Impact
Bhujbal’s return is significant given his advocacy for OBC rights, notably securing electoral reservations through a Supreme Court petition. His presence in the cabinet, now totaling 42 ministers, is expected to stabilize the Mahayuti alliance, which faced tensions after Shinde’s reported dissatisfaction with file-routing protocols. Bhujbal’s role could counterbalance regional and community dynamics, ensuring broader representation.

Looking Ahead
As Bhujbal assumes his role, focus shifts to his ability to deliver on critical portfolios amid Maharashtra’s economic and social challenges. The cabinet expansion reflects Fadnavis’s efforts to consolidate power while addressing internal coalition dynamics.
