Uttar Pradesh: The two young men were found dead in their rented accommodation in Noida's Sector 70, Uttar Pradesh, early Saturday morning. The victims, Upendra (22) and Shivam (23), were food cart vendors selling chhole kulche and bhatura in the area. The tragedy reportedly occurred after a pot of chhole was left cooking on the stove overnight, filling their room with smoke.
The two men were residing in a dingy, less ventilated room in Basai village. It was noticed by the neighbors that smoke was emitting from the room in the early morning. Breaking open the door, they found the two unconscious men. Though the doctors immediately declared them dead on arrival when taken to the district hospital in Sector 39.
The preliminary police investigation has found that the men had gone to bed at night, leaving a pot of chhole cooking on a gas stove. The stove burned throughout the night and chared the food, which produced thick smoke that filled the room. "Initial investigation suggests suffocation caused by the accumulation of smoke and carbon monoxide in the unventilated room led to their deaths," stated a Noida Police official.
The bodies have been sent for a post-mortem examination to confirm the exact cause of death. Authorities confirmed that there were no external injuries on the victims and that the preliminary findings point towards suffocation. "The post-mortem report will throw more light, but all indications are that smoke inhalation has caused the maximum damage," the official added.
This incident thus underlines how critical it is to be attentive when using the stove and the other cooking appliances. It is recommended that people ensure well-ventilation and never allow cooking to leave unattended while in confined places.
