Farmers' Protest: The Congress party has thrown its weight behind the ongoing farmers' agitation, condemning the BJP-led central and state governments for their authoritarian approach in quelling the protests and hindering the farmers' march towards Delhi.

Direct Dialogue Urged

In a significant move, the Congress has called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to engage directly with the protesting farmers and address their grievances. Party General Secretary and Member of Parliament, Randeep Singh Surjewala, stressed the importance of a direct dialogue between the government and the farmers to ensure justice.

Authoritarian Tactics Criticised

Surjewala criticised the heavy barricading of Delhi, likening it to the fortification of a military cantonment. He questioned the logic behind such extreme measures, highlighting the farmers' longstanding tradition of peaceful protest.

Farmers' Demands Echoed

Echoing the farmers' demands, Surjewala reiterated their call for the implementation of promises made to them two years ago, including the assurance of Minimum Support Price (MSP) and the waiver of debts for farmers and farm labourers. He warned that the current agitation was just the beginning and that farmers from across the country would soon join the movement.

Call for Government Accountability

Demanding accountability from the government, Surjewala questioned the restrictions placed on the farmers' right to peaceful protest. He emphasised the farmers' legitimate right to seek redress from the Prime Minister and the government, particularly regarding promises made by the BJP administration.

Promise of MSP Guarantee

In a significant announcement, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and former President Rahul Gandhi pledged to enact legislation guaranteeing MSP for various crops once the Congress-led government is formed at the Centre. This commitment addresses a longstanding demand of farmers nationwide.

As tensions escalate between the farmers and the government, the Congress party stands firmly in support of the farmers' cause. Calling for dialogue, accountability, and the fulfilment of promises, the Congress reiterates its commitment to championing the rights and welfare of India's agricultural community.
