New Delhi: In a controversial incident in Delhi’s Patparganj area, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ravinder Singh Negi, also known as Ravi Negi, made headlines after a video surfaced of him warning shopkeepers to display their full names on shop signs. The viral video shows Negi specifically targeting Muslim shopkeepers, urging them to disclose their religious identity in the nameboard to avoid misleading customers.

Controversy over nameboards

Negi was seen confronting Altamas Tomar, a Muslim shopkeeper, accusing him of concealing his Muslim identity by using the last name “Tomar.” Negi demanded that Tomar change his shop’s signage to display his full name, warning, "If you don’t write it, your shop will be closed and sealed." This demand was echoed to another shopkeeper, Mohammad Ayan, who runs Raval Dairy. Negi questioned him, saying, "Why are you deceiving the Hindu population? Your name is Mohammad Ayan, yet you've written ‘Rawal’."

Negi has published several videos on the similar issue of running shops under fake nameboards and has highlighted the issue on social media platform 'X.' His videos have gathered various responses from all over that include people questioning his authority and others supporting the act.

Public reaction and political implications

The incident sparked controversy, with critics accusing the BJP leader of religious discrimination. In response, Negi defended his actions on social media platform X, stating that shop owners should not "play with the Hindus" by using Hindu names if they belong to a different religion. He emphasized that such shops would not be allowed to operate in Patparganj if they did not display the shopkeeper’s true name and religious identity.

Government orders on name displays

This incident follows the Congress government's order in Himachal Pradesh, mandating that shop owners display their identification details, similar to a recent directive from the Yogi Adityanath-led government in Uttar Pradesh. The move is aimed at promoting transparency and ensuring proper identification of shop operators and proprietors across the state.
