New Delhi: Police have arrested the chief general manager and three staff members of the club accused of negligence. The owners also face an FIR under serious criminal sections. The panchayat sarpanch who issued the trade licence has been detained for questioning. Authorities say every role in the chain of permission will be examined. Anger and grief pushed officials to act without delay. The action signals the tragedy will not be treated lightly.
Chief minister Pramod Sawant announced Rs 5 lakh compensation for each family of the deceased. Injured survivors will get Rs 50,000 from the SDRF fund. A special team will transport bodies home and help identification. Sawant ordered speed and full government assistance to all affected families. He promised suspensions for officers found responsible. Officials have been told no procedural delay is acceptable.
Initial reports say electrical fire crackers burst inside the crowded building. Congestion, narrow exits and the late-night rush slowed people’s escape. Four tourists and fourteen staff died among those inside. Seven bodies were still being identified due to severe burns. The club opened only last year and should have had strict checks. A week-long inquiry has been ordered to confirm exact cause.
Opposition parties say the nightclub ran without valid fire safety clearance. They claim missing excise licence shows deep negligence. Congress leaders called it a Home Department failure. AAP alleged political protection kept violations hidden. Accusations point to corruption across Goa’s coastal belt. Enforcement gaps kept a risky venue operating till disaster struck. Demands for resignation have grown louder.
Sarpanch Roshan Redkar issued the trade licence in 2013 for the premises. He says the building had no construction licence and faced a demolition notice. The notice was stayed later by higher authorities. Police believe the local administration ignored warnings. Public anger rose high when he was detained. Crowds gathered outside the police station seeking answers immediately.
Sawant announced a magisterial probe headed by senior officers. Fire experts and forensic specialists will assist and submit a report within a week. Another committee led by the revenue secretary will audit nightclubs across Goa. Establishments without valid clearances will be shut. A safety SOP has been issued to all heavy-footfall venues. The government wants zero tolerance for risk.
Goa’s booming nightlife attracts thousands each night yet safety often lags behind. The blaze has turned a celebration hub into a crime scene. Public trust will return only with strict accountability. Every permission granted must now withstand scrutiny. Lives were lost because rules looked optional. The state must ensure that entertainment never again becomes danger.
