ITR Filing Deadline Extended
Business News: The Income Tax Department has given relief news for those who have not yet filed their Income Tax Return (ITR). The department has extended the last date for filing ITR by one day. Now taxpayers can file returns till Tuesday, September 16, 2025, without any penalty.
According to the data of the Income Tax Department, more than 7.3 crore ITRs have been filed till Monday, September 15. This number is more than the 7.28 crore returns of last year. These returns are being filed for the assessment year 2025-26, which is based on the income of the financial year 2024-25.
The department said that on September 15, due to technical flaws and heavy traffic on the e-filing portal, many taxpayers had difficulty in filing returns. Also on Monday was the last date for the installment of advance tax for the second quarter of the current financial year.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said, 'For the convenience of taxpayers and to smoothen the process of filing ITR, the last date has been extended to September 16, 2025.' The Income Tax Department also issued a guideline for taxpayers to resolve technical problems. This guideline proved helpful in most cases. Despite this, some taxpayers still complained of trouble accessing the portal.
So far, more than 7.3 crore ITRs have been filed. Last year, 7.28 crore returns were recorded in 2024-25, while in 2023-24 the number was 6.77 crore. These continuously show increasing figures that more and more taxpayers are filing ITRs on time every year.
The Income Tax Department has appealed to the taxpayers to file their returns by the last day and follow the guidelines of the department for any technical problem. With this, they will not have to pay any kind of fine.
