A distressing incident involving Tanya Sharma, a Delhi-NCR-based lawyer, has sparked outrage on social media. Tanya, who had booked an Uber ride, found herself being harassed through inappropriate messages from the assigned driver. When she informed the driver, Jitendra Kumar, that she would be five minutes late, he replied with an offensive text, "Jaldi aao babu yaar, man ho rha hai."
The incident didn’t stop there. Despite filing a complaint with Uber, Tanya initially received only a generic sympathetic response from the company, which failed to provide immediate action. Frustrated, she took to social media to highlight the ordeal and call attention to the lack of accountability in such situations.
In a detailed LinkedIn post, Tanya expressed her frustration over the experience, writing, "We live in the 21st century, and yet, such incidents occur even in broad daylight, in one of the poshest areas of the city. Uber India's grievance redressal seems to involve sending a sympathetic message to victims and moving on. Is this how they ensure safety?"
Her post quickly garnered attention, leading to widespread criticism of Uber’s response. Tanya later shared that Uber’s grievance officer, Hemanth Kumar Chengannagari, assured her of action but questioned why the platform allowed a 48-hour policy to address such incidents. "What if this happened to other women during those 48 hours? Who takes responsibility for our safety?" she asked.
Under significant social media backlash, Uber finally banned the driver from its platform. Tanya thanked her supporters in a follow-up post, stating, "I’m grateful for everyone who stood by me and helped raise awareness. Uber has banned the driver, ensuring he cannot harm anyone else. However, this incident underlines the importance of speaking up and demanding accountability."
