Justice Yashwant Verma
National News: The case of finding a huge amount of burnt cash at Justice Yashwant Verma's residence in March has now taken a serious political turn. At that time he was working in the Delhi High Court, and now he is a judge in the Allahabad High Court. The central government is going to raise this matter through an impeachment motion in the Lok Sabha. Under the motion, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will form a special committee to investigate the allegations against Justice Verma. If the committee finds the allegations prima facie correct, then impeachment will be recommended against him.
Earlier, as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar had accepted the opposition-backed impeachment motion, which the ruling BJP expressed displeasure over. However, that motion was never formally presented in the Rajya Sabha, so the process of repealing it has now been started. This development was seen as a violation of the all-party consensus made by the BJP, which weakened the party's strategy.
In a high-level meeting held on Wednesday, the government decided how to proceed with the impeachment proceedings. The meeting also discussed how to reduce the advantage of the opposition being portrayed as an 'anti-corruption warrior.' The BJP wants to play a leading role in this entire matter to send a message that ensuring transparency and integrity in the judiciary is its priority, especially in upcoming election states like Bihar, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu.
Even before the monsoon session of Parliament began on July 21, the BJP had prepared its impeachment motion and tried to get support from the opposition parties as well. Some opposition MPs had also signed the government's motion. But when former Vice President Dhankhar mentioned the opposition's motion in the Rajya Sabha, the BJP's strategy collapsed.
Former Vice President Dhankhar later resigned, citing ill health, but political analysts believe that his resignation was a result of the complex situation created by the impeachment motion. The BJP believes that if Dhankhar had informed the government of his intentions in advance, the party would have been able to establish better control over the motion.
After Dhankhar's resignation, the Election Commission has started the process of election for the post of vice president. According to the Commission, India will get a new vice president by the last week of August..
