Justice Yashwant Verma (Social media)
National News: The central government is preparing to bring an impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Verma of the Delhi High Court in the upcoming monsoon session. This matter is not only a question of the personal accountability of a judge but can also become a litmus test of transparency and public confidence in the country's judicial system. The government has started gathering support from opposition parties to get this motion passed in Parliament. It is believed that this motion can be passed by a two-thirds majority in both houses.
According to the Indian Constitution, to remove a judge from office, it is necessary to get the support of 100 members of Lok Sabha and 50 members of Rajya Sabha. After this, an inquiry committee is formed, which includes a Supreme Court judge, a chief justice of a high court, and a senior advocate. This committee examines the allegations and presents its findings to the Parliament. If the report confirms the serious allegations and the Parliament passes the motion by a two-thirds majority in both houses, then the President can remove the judge from office.
The mysterious fire incident in Justice Verma's government residence in Lutyens on March 14 made the whole matter a topic of discussion at the national level. After the fire, burnt cash was recovered from the spot, which made the allegations more serious. Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court DK Upadhyay ordered an inquiry with immediate effect, and Justice Verma was removed from judicial work and transferred to Allahabad High Court.
Recently Home Minister Amit Shah and Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal met President Draupadi Murmu. During this, the report of the internal investigation committee constituted by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court was submitted to the President and the Prime Minister. The report has confirmed the serious allegations against Justice Verma and recommended impeachment.
Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar have taken a clear stand on this matter. He expressed the need to reconsider the Supreme Court's decision that made permission mandatory before prosecuting judges. He also questioned the delay in the investigation process and expressed concern over the committee's inaction.
This impeachment motion against Justice Yashwant Verma is not just an action against an individual, but it is a test of the transparency, accountability, and public trust of the entire judicial structure. The debate on this issue in the Monsoon Session will not only test the dignity of the Parliament but will also decide how transparent and accountable the judiciary of India is.
