National News: Thirteen nurses from Kerala, once employed in Kuwait’s Ministry of Health, are now facing grave allegations. They reportedly borrowed small loans from Kuwaiti banks and repaid them on time to gain trust. Later, they applied for larger loans in crores. Initially, some installments were paid, but soon after, they left Kuwait quietly. This pattern of borrowing and fleeing shocked both banks and local authorities. Their actions created financial chaos for lenders.
Al Ahli Bank in Kuwait has filed a loan default case worth ₹10.33 crore against these nurses. According to the bank, each nurse owes between 6.1 million to 9.1 million rupees. Despite earning handsome salaries abroad, they failed to repay. None of them are currently in Kerala, making the case tougher. Reports suggest they later shifted to Europe and Western countries seeking better prospects. Yet their unpaid loans remain a burden for the banks.
Based on the complaint from Al Ahli Bank, Kerala police registered multiple cases. In Kottayam district, eight cases were filed at stations like Kuravilangad, Ayarkunnam, Vellore, Kaduthuruthy, Vaikom, and Thalayolaparambu. In Ernakulam district, five cases were registered at Puthencruz, Pottanikad, Varappuzha, and Angamaly. These cases highlight the seriousness of the allegations. Police believe more such scams might surface soon. For now, investigation is underway with growing pressure from the banks.
This is not the first time such fraud has come to light. In December last year, another bank had approached Kerala police over a similar issue. Ten such cases were registered. Out of them, only one borrower repaid the loan. Others approached the Kerala High Court seeking anticipatory bail. However, their bail applications were rejected. Such repeated scams show a troubling pattern. Experts say loopholes in the overseas loan system are being misused.
The matter has now reached the Kerala High Court. The bank filed a petition demanding deeper inquiry by the Crime Branch. The court dismissed it after the government assured that Crime Branch will handle the case. Banks in Kuwait are frustrated by such frauds. They fear that more professionals may adopt this trick of small repayments followed by major defaults. The case has therefore gained international attention.
Reports suggest lookout notices will be issued against all the nurses. If they return to Kerala, arrests will be immediate. The police have already started coordination with immigration authorities. Experts say tracing them abroad will be difficult. Still, international alerts are being planned. The state government has promised full cooperation with Kuwaiti banks. The matter now rests on how quickly these accused are caught.
This scandal has hurt Kerala’s reputation abroad. Nurses from Kerala are known worldwide for their dedication. Now, such frauds may raise questions against honest professionals too. Families back home are worried about the shame and legal troubles. Financial institutions may become stricter with loan rules for Indian workers. This case is not just about money but about the trust Indians hold in global markets. The fallout could last for years.
