Mahakumbh 2025: Today marks the commencement of the revered Maha Kumbh Mela, with thousands of devotees gathering at the sacred Sangam for a holy bath on Paush Purnima. The event is expected to attract over 10 million participants, all seeking spiritual purification in the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. From the early hours of Brahma Muhurta, devotees have been immersing themselves in the sacred waters, a practice that will continue throughout the day across various bathing ghats.
To ensure the safety of attendees, extensive security measures have been implemented. The water police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are actively monitoring the ghats. Deep water barricades have been erected along the Ganga and Yamuna to manage the flow of devotees and maintain order. Bathing facilities have been constructed along a 12-kilometer stretch of both rivers, accommodating the massive influx of pilgrims.
The Paush Purnima bathing festival not only marks a significant spiritual event but also heralds the beginning of Kalpavas, a period when devotees commit to living near the riverbanks for spiritual practices. Tomorrow, January 14, coinciding with Makar Sankranti, will see saints from all 13 Akharas participating in this sacred ritual.
In anticipation of today’s festivities, an impressive turnout was recorded yesterday, with approximately 5 million devotees taking a holy dip at Sangam. This included a diverse crowd of saints, sages, families, and individuals of all ages. The Maha Kumbh is projected to witness an astounding total of over 450 million attendees throughout its duration. As this grand event unfolds, it continues to be a profound expression of faith and community among millions who gather to partake in this time-honored tradition.
