Bengaluru: An awkward situation arose at a Karnataka Congress program when Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge got angry at the workers who were raising slogans in support of Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. During the assuming charge ceremony of the new State Congress President BK Hariprasad, the workers were continuously raising slogans of 'DK-DK'. When the sloganeering did not stop despite several attempts, Kharge reprimanded them from the stage and asked them to remain silent and sit down. The video of this incident quickly went viral on social media, on which discussion has started even in political circles.

What happened in the program?

Many senior Congress leaders were present in the welcome and assuming charge program of BK Hariprasad. During the programme, some workers were continuously raising slogans in support of DK Shivakumar. They were signaled several times from the stage to remain calm, but the sloganeering continued. After this, Mallikarjun Kharge, while holding the mike, reprimanded the workers and said that this is not the program of any one leader but of the Congress Party.

What did Kharge say?

Angered by the sloganeering of the workers, Kharge said, "Shut up, sit down. Don't show that the entire country is in your hands." He clarified that instead of praising any one leader in the party's program, the focus should be on strengthening the organization. Kharge also said that if each group raised slogans only of its favorite leader, the purpose of the program would be defeated.

Did DK Shivakumar try to handle the situation?

In the video, Chief Minister DK Shivkumar was also seen trying to pacify the workers. He appealed to the supporters with hand gestures to sit down and stop sloganeering. However, the noise continued for some time, after which Kharge had to adopt a strict tone.

Why did he warn about discipline?

In his address, Kharge emphasized party discipline. He said that the Congress organization is bigger than any one individual and the identity of the workers is also with the party. He also said that there are videos of sloganeering and uproar that took place in the programme and action will be considered against those who indulged in indiscipline.

Why has there been increased turmoil in Karnataka Congress?

The incident comes at a time when Karnataka Congress is trying to keep the organization united after the recent leadership change. After a long tussle over the post of chief minister, DK Shivakumar has taken charge of the state. Earlier, there had been continuous discussions regarding leadership between the supporters of Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar.

Did the viral video increase political discussion?

After the video of Kharge's outrage surfaced, a new debate has started in the political circles. Opposition parties are linking this to the internal factionalism of the Congress, while Congress leaders say that the party leadership was only trying to maintain discipline. At present this video is being shared rapidly on social media and remains the center of political discussions.
