New Delhi: India's two biggest national parties show a stark financial divide this election season. Fresh disclosures filed with the Election Commission reveal the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has over Rs 6,900 crore in its bank accounts, while the Indian National Congress holds just Rs 53 crore.
The BJP's bank balance stands at an estimated Rs 6,900 crore, based on data submitted after the Delhi assembly elections. In contrast, the Congress has reported a total balance of about Rs 53 crore across its headquarters and all units.
The gap highlights a huge financial imbalance between the two parties at a time when election readiness and campaign spending are key.
Election authorities require political parties to submit their finances after major polls. These disclosures give a snapshot of how much money parties have to spend on outreach, organisation and campaign logistics.
Analysts say several factors have helped boost the BJP’s resources:
The BJP’s cash reserves now outstrip those of many other national and regional parties, giving it a wide margin for election-related spending.
The financial disclosures show smaller parties also have varying levels of funds:
