New Delhi: The Monsoon Session of Parliament is scheduled to commence on July 20 and will run through August 13, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced on Saturday. The timeline was finalized following President Droupadi Murmu’s approval of the Union Cabinet's recommendation.

"The Session will commence on 20 July, 2026 and continue till 13 August, 2026 for meaningful debate, discussion and decisions on issues of National Importance," Rijiju posted on X.

While routine on paper, this three-week session marks the first legislative sitting after dramatic political realignments severely fractured key opposition blocs, fundamentally altering the math inside the Lower House.

What is the new house math?

Following twin rebellions in major regional camps, the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) arrives with significantly bolstered numbers. 20 out of the party’s 28 Lok Sabha MPs have revolted against the leadership of Mamata Banerji to back the NDA. Uddhav Thackeray’s camp saw six of its nine Lok Sabha members cross over to join Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s faction.

While these shifts heavily tilt floor dynamics toward the treasury benches, a formal ruling from Speaker Om Birla regarding the rebels' requests to be recognized as independent legislative groups remains pending. Concurrently, recent Upper House elections have similarly strengthened the NDA's footing in the Rajya Sabha.

What are the high stakes and key flashpoints?

The upcoming session is vital for the government. This is looking to recover from a major setback in the previous Budget Session when a high-profile Constitution Amendment Bill failed to clear the Lok Sabha. The speculation are also there that the government may reintroduce the same bill, though official confirmation is still awaited. Meanwhile, the opposition is gearing up to challenge the government on several fronts. They demanded for accountability regarding the NEET re-examination. Along with aggressive pushback against the engineering of splits within the TMC and Shiv Sena (UBT). A demand for a downward revision of domestic fuel prices, citing the easing of global supply chain pressures following the recent peace accord between the United States and Iran that concluded a three-month Middle East conflict.
