J-K News: On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the highly anticipated 6.5 km Z-Morh tunnel in Ganderbal district, Central Kashmir. This strategic infrastructure project is set to ensure year-round accessibility to the picturesque Sonamarg tourist resort, a significant boost for both tourism and local economy.

A Strategic Arrival

Prime Minister Modi arrived at Srinagar airport around 10:45 am before heading to Sonamarg for the tunnel's inauguration. His visit marked a notable occasion, being the first since the assembly elections held in September-October of the previous year. Accompanying him were Jammu and Kashmir's Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, highlighting the political significance of this development.

Engineering Marvel with Defense Significance

Constructed at a cost exceeding ₹2,700 crore, the Z-Morh tunnel features a two-lane design that connects Gagangir and Sonamarg. Notably, it includes a 7.5-metre-wide emergency escape passage, ensuring safety for travelers. Situated at an elevation of over 8,650 feet, this tunnel is crucial for improving connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg while facilitating access to Leh by bypassing areas prone to landslides and avalanches.

Recognition of Dedication

During the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Modi took time to meet with construction workers, acknowledging their hard work and commitment in completing this challenging engineering project. The Z-Morh tunnel, which began construction in May 2015 and became fully operational after a soft opening in February 2024, stands as a testament to resilience and innovation.

Transformative Impact on Connectivity

The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), overseeing the project, described the Z-Morh tunnel as a transformative development for the region. It promises to provide uninterrupted connectivity not only for civilian traffic but also for military operations, particularly alongside the ongoing Zojila tunnel project. Equipped with advanced technologies, the tunnel offers real-time updates, setting new standards for regional infrastructure.

Unlocking Potential for Trade and Tourism

NHIDCL emphasized that this breakthrough not only connects Gagangir and Sonamarg but also unlocks significant potential for trade and tourism in the region. With improved access to natural beauty and adventure opportunities, the Z-Morh tunnel is poised to enhance the travel experience while contributing to economic growth. In summary, Prime Minister Modi’s inauguration of the Z-Morh tunnel marks a pivotal moment in enhancing connectivity in Kashmir, promising benefits that extend beyond mere transportation.
