Massive Security Overhaul as Prayagraj Prepares for Mahakumbh 2025 (X/ @theindiainfocom)

Uttar Pradesh: The Maha Kumbh has begun in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, with approximately four crore devotees expected to take a holy dip at the sacred confluence during January 13-14. The event started on Paush Purnima (January 13) and attracted almost one crore devotees, with three crore more expected on Makar Sankranti (January 14).

Seven-ring security transforms Prayagraj into a fortress

The authorities have enforced a seven-ring security system and made the mela area a fortified zone. The entire area has been declared a "no vehicle zone," and traffic diversion has been ensured across seven key routes leading to Sangam. Advanced security measures include 2,751 CCTV cameras, of which 328 are AI-enabled, strategically placed at pivotal locations like Sangam and the tent city.

IG (Prayagraj range) Prem Gautam also shared that around 40,000 personnel, including paramilitary forces and teams from UP technical services, have been deployed. Key locations such as pandals, camps, tent cities, Sangam, and Sanskriti Gram are under strict police surveillance.

Anti-drone technology ensures 24/7 vigilance

To enhance security, an anti-drone system and 20 high-tech drones have been installed for round-the-clock surveillance. The drones give live feed across all 25 sectors of the mela, giving a detailed view of crowd activities to smoothen operations. The upgraded Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) supports effective crowd management and traffic regulation.

Massive Infrastructure: 150,000 Tents and 450,000 Electricity Connections
The authorities have built 150,000 tents to accommodate this massive amount of pilgrims. According to estimates, the attendance would be thrice that of Russia's population. It has also targeted to offer 450,000 electricity connections, with more than half of them already working.

Kumbh mela: An international and spiritual festival

The Kumbh mela has been classified as one of the intangible cultural heritages of humanity by UNESCO since 2017. Richard Gere, David Lynch, and the Dalai Lama have been among its attendees in the past.

Held every three years in four sacred cities, the Kumbh mela symbolizes salvation and purification and culminates in the Maha Kumbh every 12 years, which is regarded as the most auspicious. Devotees believe that bathing in these rivers during the mela absolves sins and grants liberation from the cycle of life and death.
