Tamil Nadu News: At least five coaches of a Puducherry-bound passenger train derailed near Tamil Nadu's Villupuram railway station on Tuesday morning. Fortunately, the quick action of the loco pilot to halt the train prevented a more serious incident. Railway officials confirmed that all passengers were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported. The exact cause of the derailment will be determined following a thorough investigation.
Railway personnel were promptly dispatched to the scene, and repair operations for the derailed train are currently in progress. In the meantime, railway staff have cleared the tracks to allow other trains to continue their journeys without significant delays. The MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train had departed Villupuram at 5:25 AM and was navigating a curve when the derailment occurred. The loco pilot’s decisive action was instrumental in averting potential disaster.
The Villupuram Railway Police have initiated a comprehensive inquiry into the incident to ascertain its cause. This derailment follows another recent incident where a goods train derailed near Srinavaspuram in Andhra Pradesh's Palnadu district just last week. That train was en route to the Vishnupuram Rashi Cement Factory for loading cement, prompting authorities to reroute trains on the Guntur-Hyderabad line via Vijayawada.
In October 2023, a significant accident occurred when twelve coaches of the Bagmati Express, traveling from Mysuru in Karnataka to Darbhanga in Bihar, derailed near Kavarapettai, approximately 40 kilometers from Chennai. Despite receiving clearance to proceed on the main line, the passenger train mistakenly entered a loop line, resulting in injuries to 19 individuals; however, there were no fatalities reported.
At that time, around 1,360 passengers were aboard. As investigations continue into these incidents, railway safety remains a critical concern for officials and passengers alike.
