National News: A major digital overhaul is on the horizon for government schools in Punjab. For the first time in nearly a decade, the state government has greenlit a ₹350 crore initiative aimed at upgrading digital infrastructure in schools. Under this plan, ₹250 crore will be allocated for the purchase of new computers, while ₹100 crore will be spent on modernizing computer labs across the state.

First Major Computer Procurement Since 2015

Remarkably, no new computers have been purchased for Punjab’s government schools since 2015. While a proposal for new systems was considered last year, it was shelved due to the nationwide survey being conducted by the Ministry of Education for the National Performance Grading Index (PGI 2.0). The state government was hesitant to formally acknowledge the outdated condition of existing systems, fearing it could negatively impact Punjab's PGI score. As a result, the initiative was put on hold.

Digital Education Roots Back to 2005 with PICTES

Punjab’s journey toward digital literacy began in 2005 with the formation of the Punjab Information and Communication Technology Education Society (PICTES). This body was responsible for appointing computer teachers in government schools and strengthening technical education. Even today, the state continues to conduct technical training programs to ensure teachers remain proficient in modern technologies and instructional tools.

Digital Libraries and Smart Classrooms on the Rise

In addition to new computers, the state government has introduced digital libraries and smart classrooms in several schools. These facilities enable students to access online learning, e-content, and multimedia tools, significantly enhancing the quality of education. The initiative is aligned with the goal of preparing students for the demands of a digital-first 21st-century world.

Every Government School to Get Its Own Website

To further digitize education and boost communication with parents, the government plans to launch dedicated websites for each government school. These platforms will serve as a bridge between schools and families—providing access to homework, academic updates, student progress, and school events from the comfort of home. The move is aimed at enhancing transparency and parental engagement.

A Bold Step Toward Tech-Driven Public Education

This digital push by the Punjab government marks a significant step toward modernizing the public education system. It promises to not only uplift the learning experience for students but also position government schools as technologically advanced alternatives to their private counterparts.
