New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin reached Delhi on Thursday evening. As soon as he left the airport, his convoy turned straight towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi's house, where both the leaders sat comfortably and talked over dinner. This was not an ordinary formal meeting but a meeting of two old colleagues stopping and laughing, talking about serious issues. This is Putin's first visit to India after the outbreak of the Ukraine war, so all eyes are on it.
Putin last visited India in December 2021. At that time the environment of the world was different, there was less tension, and things were going normally on many issues. Now the circumstances have changed. Therefore, this time's meeting is being considered a little more important for both the countries. The visit has become more sensitive after America imposed heavy tariffs on Indian goods. Both India and Russia understand that a lot can be cleared through talks.
Both the leaders will talk about many agreements on trade, energy, defense, and mutual cooperation. New possibilities are also to be discussed in areas like health, education, and media. Both countries have already indicated that further strengthening their economic partnership is their priority.
He will meet President Draupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday morning. After this he will go to Rajghat and pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. There will be one-on-one talks between Modi and Putin at Hyderabad House, where the real decisions will be made. By evening, Putin will launch the India channel of Russia's state broadcaster RT.
This time Putin's visit is taking place at a time when relations between India and America are a bit strained. America has decided to impose up to a 50 percent tariff on Indian goods, which has had a direct impact on business. For this reason, Putin's visit to India is being considered as a diplomatic balancing step. It is not just about trade but also about the direction of global politics.
According to sources, a good increase in exports of medicines, agricultural products, food items, and daily consumer goods from India to Russia is expected. India-Russia trade has reached record levels in the last two years, and this visit can take it further.
