Maharashtra: A very important judgment was given under which Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader, was given bail on Friday after he was summoned for defamation through controversial comments regarding Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. He had made this speech in March 2023 in London. The speech there had created a ruckus in the country as well as initiated a defamation case.

The words spoken by Gandhi for Savarkar

The case started with a complaint filed by Satyaki Savarkar, who is the grandnephew of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. It was averred that Gandhi was misleading some historical facts. Moreover, it was canvassed that Gandhi was misleading about a particular fact about a particular incident in which Savarkar and his friends were alleged to have beaten up a Muslim man, though this fact never appeared in the writings of Savarkar.

Court Appearance and Bail Obtained

Rahul Gandhi gets bail after appearance; the advocate argues bail on a Rs 25,000 surety. Gandhi appeared through video conferencing in the Pune court, wherein his advocate Milind Pawar could get bail granted for him. The permanent exemption was granted from appearing in future cases. Surety was taken by the senior Congress leader Mohan Joshi.

This case will move on to the next hearing scheduled on 18th February 2025. Defamation is a strong point of issue that has more political and legal implications for Gandhi and his party.
