New Delhi: Agencies found surprising details while studying the Delhi blast case. Information showed a link between Afira Bibi, wife of Jaish commander Umar Farooq, and Dr Shaheen. Afira was a leading face of a new women’s wing called Jamaat-ul-Mominat. She recently joined its advisory council known as the Shura. Sources say Afira worked closely with Masood Azhar’s younger sister Saadia Azhar. Both women were reportedly in touch with Dr Shaheen, creating a secret chain.
Afira Bibi became influential after joining the women’s unit. Her husband Umar Farooq was the nephew of Masood Azhar. He was killed in an encounter after the 2019 Pulwama attack. That attack took the lives of 40 CRPF soldiers. After Umar’s death, Afira began working more actively within the organisation. Her growing role made her a key handler for women recruits. This helped her build deeper networks across regions.
Dr Shaheen worked as a senior doctor at Al-Falah University in Faridabad. She was arrested after rifles and ammunition were found in her car. Investigators believe she was asked to open an India branch of Jamaat-ul-Mominat. They also suspect she was recruiting radicalised women for terror activities. Her communication with Afira raised more questions. This link became a turning point in the investigation.
Shaheen had worked in several medical colleges earlier. Records show she headed the pharmacology department at a Kanpur medical college from 2012 to 2013. Her passport revealed she lived in the UAE for two years between 2016 and 2018. Colleagues said she often disappeared from work without notice. Her sudden leaves created suspicion even before her arrest. Investigators are now checking her old contacts as well.
Shaheen married Dr Hayat Zafar years ago. Their marriage ended in 2012. They have two children who live with Dr Zafar. Her former husband says he has had no contact with her after the separation. Shaheen’s father also said he finds it hard to believe she was part of such activities. But investigators say the evidence against her is strong. Her personal life remains under review as part of the case.
A major twist came after the Delhi blast near Red Fort. Umar, another colleague from Al-Falah University, died inside the exploding car. Ten people were killed in the incident. Twenty others were injured. This blast pushed agencies to intensify their search. Their findings connected the blast to the Faridabad seizure. The entire network suddenly came under scrutiny.
The plan involving Afira, Saadia, and Shaheen appears to have failed due to quick police action. Their communication trail exposed the chain of coordination. More evidence came from seized weapons. The Delhi blast acted as a catalyst for the investigation. The women’s wing was believed to be preparing new recruits. But the early arrests broke the network before it could grow. Agencies say more arrests are possible soon.
