UP News: In a devastating incident on Tuesday, a makeshift stage collapsed during the 'Nirvana Laddu Parv,' a religious event dedicated to Bhagwan Adinath, the first Tirthankara in Jainism, in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district. The mishap resulted in the tragic loss of at least five lives, while over 60 people, including Jain disciples and police officials, sustained injuries.
The stage collapse created widespread panic among devotees at the event. Many attendees suffered injuries in the ensuing chaos, and rescue operations began promptly to retrieve individuals trapped under the debris. Authorities acted swiftly, initiating relief measures to address the situation.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep concern over the tragedy. He directed district officials to provide immediate medical assistance to the injured and ensure relief measures. “I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured,” Adityanath remarked.
District Magistrate Asmita Lal and Superintendent of Police Arpit Vijayvargiya visited the district hospital to oversee the treatment of the injured. DM Lal confirmed five fatalities, though reports suggest the death toll could rise as two more deaths are suspected. However, official confirmation is pending.
SP Vijayvargiya shared additional details, stating, “A ‘machaan’ (makeshift platform) collapsed during the 'Laddu Mahotsav' program. Around 20-25 people sustained injuries, some of whom received first aid and were discharged. However, 2-3 individuals are seriously injured and undergoing treatment in nearby hospitals.”
This tragic event comes on the heels of another calamity earlier this month, where a stampede near Andhra Pradesh's Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Tirupati left six people dead and 35 injured. Thousands of devotees rushed to secure free visit passes, leading to the chaos. "When the gate was opened, about 2,500 people surged through, causing a few to fall," district collector S. Venkateswar recounted. Andhra Pradesh CM N. Chandrababu Naidu ordered a high-level investigation into the incident and directed relief measures for the injured.
