Voter List (Credit:Top Indian News)
National News: A special voter list revision campaign will begin in Uttar Pradesh this October. This exercise is being conducted after nearly 22 years. The Election Commission has clarified that 70% of voters will not need to show any ID. They only have to sign a pre-filled form. This form will be delivered to their homes by Booth Level Officers (BLOs).
In this campaign, only 30% of people will be required to show documents. The Election Commission has listed 12 valid identification proofs. These include Aadhaar card, PAN card, passport, driving license and pension ID. Those whose names do not match in the two lists will have to provide these documents.
This entire drive is linked to past records. The Election Commission is matching the current voter list with the 2003 list. Voters whose names appear in both lists will not be required to provide documents. So far, nearly 60-70% names have been verified successfully.
The most important responsibility lies on BLOs. They will go door-to-door and collect signatures on the given forms. Along with that, they will upload the collected information in real-time through a mobile app. This will reduce errors and help the commission get correct data instantly.
According to the Election Commission, this new process will make life easier for voters. They will not have to repeatedly show their ID every time. This will also reduce the workload of BLOs. The better the data mapping, the fewer documents will be required from the people.
The special revision shows that the Election Commission is fully preparing for the upcoming elections. A clean and updated voter list is the foundation of free and fair elections. That is why technology is being used alongside door-to-door verification. This combined approach is expected to bring better accuracy.
For those who need to submit documents, 12 IDs are valid. These include Aadhaar card, passport, driving license, PAN card, MNREGA job card, bank or post office photo passbook, pension document, health insurance smart card, NPR smart card, and unique ID for persons with disabilities. Identity cards of MPs and MLAs are also valid.
