Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday urged Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant to protect the country's constitution, democracy, and judiciary. Speaking at the inauguration of the Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench building of the Calcutta High Court, Banerjee also appealed to Justice Surya Kant to protect the people of the country from what she described as being wrongly targeted by central agencies.

What was Mamata Banerjee’s message for the CJI?

"Please save the country's Constitution, democracy, judiciary, history, and geography from destruction. You (the Chief Justice) are the guardian of our Constitution; we are under your legal protection. Please protect the people," Mamata Banerjee said in her message to CJI Surya Kant.

"Nowadays, there is a trend of media trials even before cases are settled; this too must be stopped," the West Bengal Chief Minister added.

Justice Surya Kant was also present at the event.

What was Mamata Banerjee’s statement on West Midnapore?

In a post on her WhatsApp channel after a public meeting, Mamata Banerjee portrayed the district of West Midnapore as a land that has repeatedly raised its voice against oppression, from the anti-colonial struggle to the political upheaval of 2011.  It is noteworthy that in 2011, the TMC ended the 34-year rule of the Left Front in West Bengal. She also mentioned the long history of political resistance in the West Midnapore district on this occasion.

"The land of undivided Midnapore roared in resistance against tyranny, exploitation, and injustice, challenging the iron grip of the British Empire. Carrying forward that legacy, the people of West Midnapore stood at the forefront in the restoration of democracy in 2011," Banerjee wrote.

Referring to the massive crowd at the Rana Sankalp Sabha, the Trinamool leader emphasized that this gathering reflects the resolve of the people to defeat the forces of division and discrimination, which she described as "anti-Bengal divisive forces”.
