New Delhi: Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir erupted on June 9. A shutdown called by the Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee turned violent across the region. JAAC's 'Long March' to Muzaffarabad brought thousands onto the streets. Protesters clashed with security forces in multiple areas. In Rawalkot, crowds raised slogans directly against Pakistan Army chief General Asim Munir and the ISI. The chants, "Asim Munir terrorist" and "ISI Dahshatgard", echoed through the streets. Security forces have been deployed in large numbers across the region.

Why the clashes in Rawalkot?

Protesters and Pakistani Rangers faced off again in Rawalkot. It was not the first time. Tensions have been building for weeks. This time the confrontation turned ugly. Multiple locations saw security force deployments ramped up after the clashes.

What JAAC leaders said?

JAAC leader Khawaja Mehran addressed supporters directly. He said, "Mark this day. Tell the coming generations that we stood up. We did not bow before their paramilitary force. We were not afraid."
Mosques in Rawalkot made public announcements calling people to join the march. The announcements said the land of Jammu and Kashmir was under attack by a foreign force, and urged all Kashmiris to join and prove their self-respect.

JAAC senior leader Shaukat Nawaz Mir said voices are being crushed. "Our youth are being killed," he said.

Why the protest is happening?

The movement centres on three demands. These demands are - proper political representation for locals, economic rights, and administrative autonomy. The anger has been building for weeks. Additional security forces remain deployed. The situation is tense.
