Pakistan Launches Another Airstrike On Afghanistan, Kunar Targeted Overnight

Islamabad: Tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan seems to be increasing once again. In the early hours of Monday, Pakistani fighter planes carried out air strikes in Kunar and Paktika, two eastern provinces of Afghanistan. According to initial information, a residential area in Kunar has been targeted, in which 3 civilians are reported dead and many injured.

Where did the night attack take place in Kunar?

According to the information, Pakistani planes attacked Nurgal district of Kunar province at around 2.30 in the night. Local Taliban officials said a house was targeted in Patan village of Nurgal. The attack has resulted in the death of three civilians and injuries to several people. There was chaos in the area after this attack which took place at midnight.

All these figures are based on preliminary reports and have yet to be independently confirmed. The number of further losses and injuries may also change.

Was there an airstrike in Paktika also?

According to the report, after Kunar, air strikes were also reported in Barmal district of Paktika province at around 4 pm. According to local media, an empty shop in Tor Kandi area and an empty house in Rakha area were destroyed. There is no news of any casualty at both these places.

In this way, news of action by Pakistani planes in two eastern provinces of Afghanistan has come to light early on Monday morning.

What did Pakistan say on the attack?

Till the time of writing the report, Pakistani Army had not issued any official statement regarding this airstrike. However, Pakistan has been expressing concern about the bases of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan i.e. TTP present in Afghanistan for a long time. Islamabad alleges that TTP carries out attacks in Pakistan from safe havens in Afghanistan. Kabul denies these allegations.

Why is the tension between the two countries greater than before?

There is an old dispute between Pakistan and Afghanistan regarding border security and the presence of terrorist groups. Since the return of Taliban to Afghanistan, relations between the two countries have become sour due to cross-border attacks and military actions. Pakistan has earlier also described the action taken in the eastern areas of Afghanistan as a campaign against targets linked to TTP.

The latest air strike comes at a time when attacks on security forces have increased in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. A day earlier, Pakistani officials had informed about the killing of six soldiers, including two officers, in Hangu district.

At present, detailed information regarding the total loss and number of injured in the attacks in Kunar and Paktika is awaited. Also, an official reaction is yet to come from Pakistan on this action.
