Major Setback for PoK Polls as Imran Khan’s Party Announces Boycott, Blames Political Pressure (X)

Islamabad: Assembly elections are to be held in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) on July 27, but before that, Imran Khan's party PTI has taken a big decision. The party has announced its withdrawal from the elections. PTI says that in the current circumstances, it is not possible to conduct free and fair elections. The party made it clear that this decision is not for any profit or loss but has been taken to stand with the people there and in favor of democracy.

What was the reason given for keeping distance from the elections?

PTI said in its official statement that the current situation in PoK is not favorable for holding elections. The party alleges that there is constant pressure being put on political activities and people are not getting the opportunity to express their views openly. The party said that unless an environment for free and fair elections is created, participation in the electoral process will not be in accordance with democratic principles.

What is the matter of JAAC movement?

PTI has also mentioned the developments related to Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) as the reason behind its decision. In recent months, there have been protests in many areas of PoK against inflation, food supply and administrative policies. The party has demanded that the government initiate dialogue with the agitators and restore normalcy in the area. In this background, a demand for reconsideration of the election schedule has also been raised.

Has there also been a demand to postpone the elections?

PTI says that in the current situation, instead of holding elections, political tension should be reduced first. The party has appealed to the administration to review the election schedule and move forward taking all parties into confidence. His argument is that if the public does not have confidence in the election process, the credibility of the results will also be affected.

Why are these elections important only on 27th July?

Voting for the PoK Assembly is scheduled for July 27. These elections are being held at a time when there is already an atmosphere of tension within Pakistan due to political instability, economic crisis and the arrest of Imran Khan. In such a situation, the decision of the main opposition party PTI to stay out of the elections has made the entire electoral scenario more political.

What will be the impact of this decision?

Political analysts believe that PTI's boycott may raise questions on the competitiveness and legitimacy of the elections. However, the final impact will depend on the voting percentage and participation of other political parties. At present, there has been no detailed official response from the Government of Pakistan on PTI's allegations and decision to boycott.
