New Delhi: Delhi Capitals rode a magnificent innings by Sameer Rizvi and some sharp bowling performances to overpower Mumbai Indians by six wickets in a one-sided IPL 2026 tie at the Arun Jaitley Stadium here on Saturday. Sameer Rizvi was unlucky to miss out on a century, scoring 90 runs off 51 deliveries.
Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel won the toss and elected to bowl first. Batting first, Mumbai Indians posted a total of 162 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in their allotted 20 overs, setting a target of 163 runs. Delhi's bowlers delivered a sharp performance in this match. In the third over of the innings—when MI's score stood at 18—Mukesh Kumar sent both Riyan Rickelton and Tilak Varma back to the pavilion in a single over.
Subsequently, Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma stabilized the innings; however, after Rohit's dismissal with the score at 71, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. For Mumbai, captain Suryakumar Yadav top-scored with 51 runs off 36 balls, while Rohit Sharma contributed 35 runs and Naman Dhir scored 28. For Delhi Capitals, Mukesh Kumar claimed 2 wickets, while Lungi Ngidi, Vipraj Nigam, T. Natarajan, and Axar Patel each took one wicket. Kuldeep Yadav bowled 3 overs in today's match, conceding 31 runs without taking a wicket. Mumbai Indians played without their regular captain, Hardik Pandya. In his absence, Suryakumar Yadav was appointed as the captain for this match.
Rizvi, who had played an unbeaten knock of 70 runs off 47 balls against the Lucknow Super Giants in the previous match, walked to the crease when Delhi's score stood at 7 runs for the loss of two wickets. In addition to playing a blistering innings of 90 runs off 51 balls—punctuated by seven fours and seven sixes—he steered Delhi to victory by forging a 66-run partnership off 49 balls for the third wicket with Pathum Nissanka (44), followed by a 78-run stand off 39 balls for the fourth wicket with David Miller (21 not out). For Mumbai, Deepak Chahar, Mitchell Santner, and Corbin Bosch claimed one wicket each.
Delhi posted a score of 42 runs for the loss of two wickets during the Powerplay, while the team reached its half-century mark on the second delivery of the eighth over. Off Bosch's bowling, Naman dropped a difficult catch of Nissanka, and Rizvi rubbed salt in Mumbai's wounds by smashing a magnificent six on the very next delivery. He welcomed Santner in the following over with a boundary, but the veteran New Zealand bowler utilized his experience to bring an end to Nissanka's innings.
Rizvi struck two consecutive fours against Bosch, with his ramp shot over the wicketkeeper proving to be a delightful highlight. He dismantled the pressure built by Mumbai's bowlers by hitting two sixes off the final two deliveries of the over. Delhi plundered 20 runs from this 11th over of the innings. Hitting a six over the covers against Markande, Rizvi completed his half-century off 31 balls and simultaneously brought up Delhi's team hundred. On the very next delivery, using his footwork, he lofted the ball over mid-wicket into the stands.
Leading the team in the absence of regular captain Hardik Pandya—who was unwell—Suryakumar scored 51 runs off 36 balls, featuring three fours and two sixes. He forged crucial partnerships: a 53-run stand for the third wicket with Rohit Sharma (35) and a 37-run stand for the fifth wicket with Naman Dhir (28). Rohit’s 26-ball innings included five fours and a six, while Naman struck two fours and a six in his 21-ball knock.
For Delhi, Mukesh Kumar claimed two wickets for 26 runs across three overs. He received solid support from Axar (1 wicket for 22 runs), Lungi Ngidi (1 wicket for 34 runs), Vipraj Nigam (1 wicket for 24 runs), and T. Natarajan (1 wicket for 24 runs).
Chasing the target, Delhi got off to an extremely poor start. In the very first over, KL Rahul (1) attempted to glance a delivery from Deepak Chahar that was drifting down the leg side, only to edge it to wicketkeeper Rickelton. In the following over, Nitish Rana was run out by a direct hit from Jasprit Bumrah before he could even open his account. Meanwhile, Chahar failed to hold onto a sharp return catch off a powerful drive by Nissanka; the Sri Lankan batsman celebrated this reprieve by smashing two fours against Santner in the very next over. Elsewhere, Sameer Rizvi—who had played a match-winning innings in the previous game—attempted to alleviate the pressure by hitting a six and a four off consecutive deliveries against Shardul Thakur.
After conceding 34 runs in the previous two overs, Suryakumar handed the ball to Bumrah; the veteran pacer vindicated his captain's decision by conceding just a single run. However, he did not receive adequate support from the other bowlers at the opposite end. Maintaining his aggressive approach, Rizvi effortlessly struck sixes and fours against Chahar and Thakur, leaving the team needing just 25 runs for victory in the final five overs. Miller, who had been playing a cautious innings until then, brought the team closer to victory by hitting two fours against Bumrah. Rizvi was caught by Tilak Varma off Bosch's bowling in the 17th over. He missed out on a century, but departed with the team's victory all but assured.
Invited to bat first, Rickelton (9) welcomed Mukesh with a boundary, while in the second over, as Rohit took strike, chants of "Rohit! Rohit!" began to reverberate across the stadium. The former Indian captain further electrified the crowd by smashing three boundaries off the first three deliveries against Ngidi. Mukesh delivered a major breakthrough for Delhi by claiming two wickets in that very over. After dismissing the in-form Rickelton, he took a brilliant catch off his own bowling to send Tilak Varma (0) back to the pavilion.
Suryakumar opened his account with a boundary off the very first ball, but the Delhi bowlers subsequently succeeded in curbing the run rate. Rohit attempted to accelerate the scoring with a six against Nigam, while Suryakumar did the same against Axar. In an attempt to unleash another powerful stroke, Rohit was brilliantly caught by Nitish Rana in the covers off Axar's bowling. Strengthening his record against Rohit in the IPL, Axar dismissed him for the fourth time in 11 innings.
From the other end, Nigam sent Sherfane Rutherford (5) back to the pavilion before he could pose a serious threat. Naman, who arrived at the crease, got off the mark with a boundary against Natarajan, while a single from Suryakumar brought up the team's century of runs in the 14th over. Suryakumar and Naman each hit a six against Kuldeep, helping Mumbai amass 17 runs in the 15th over. Suryakumar Yadav completed his half-century by stealing two runs off Ngidi but was trapped LBW on the very next delivery. Mitchell Santner (18 not out) and Naman struck boundaries against Natarajan, yet the team continued to struggle to accelerate the run rate. Bosch (11 not out) steered the team past the 160-run mark by hitting boundaries off the final two deliveries of the last over against Mukesh.
