Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 12, 2025, and at this crucial juncture, questions are being raised about his future financial security. The BCCI has improved pension schemes for former cricketers, which is also likely to benefit veterans like Kohli. The BCCI announced an increase in the monthly pension amount for former men and women cricketers and umpires in June 2022. Under the scheme, Test cricketers receive a pension based on their number of matches and time of retirement.
For example, cricketers who retired before 31 December 1993 and played more than 25 Test matches used to get ₹50,000 per month, which has now been increased to ₹70,000 per month. Whereas, those who played less than 25 Test matches have been given ₹60,000 per month, up from ₹37,500.
Virat Kohli has played 123 Test matches and captained in 68 matches, which puts him in the ₹70,000 per month category. This means, after retirement, he can get a pension of ₹70,000 per month from BCCI.
Apart from this, BCCI has also made a one-time payment scheme, under which cricketers who have played more than 100 Test matches will get ₹ 1.5 crore, those who have played 75 to 99 matches will get ₹ 1 crore, and those who have played 50 to 74 matches will get up to ₹ 75 lakh. However, this scheme does not apply in Kohli's case, as he has not played more than 100 Test matches by the time of retirement.
