New Delhi: Could major sporting events around the world be linked to sex? If this question has ever crossed your mind, learn the answer today. The answer is yes. A funny incident has emerged from the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina, Italy. The supply of condoms stored in the Games Village, built for the athletes, ran out in just three days. This means that while medals may be a concern, the athletes used so many condoms that they ran out of them.
A unique incident has emerged during the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics 2026. The stock of free condoms available in the Athletes' Village ran out within the first few days of competition. The Organizing Committee initially distributed approximately 10,000 free condom packs, but these quickly ran out due to the athletes' demand, which was much higher than anticipated.
This year's Athletes' Village is located in Cortina d'Ampezzo, where athletes from various countries are living together in temporary accommodation. Such modular and shared spaces involve increased contact between athletes, making it crucial to promote safe sexual practices.
The Organizing Committee has acknowledged that additional condom supplies are being ordered and this service will continue throughout the Olympics. However, this shortage has sparked considerable discussion, as the previous Paris Summer Olympics 2024 provided 200,000 male and 20,000 female condoms. Furthermore, in some previous Olympics, this number has even reached 300,000.
At the Tokyo Olympics 2021, COVID-19 restrictions restricted intimate contact between athletes, reducing demand for such items. However, now that normalcy has returned, promoting safe sex is considered an important part of the event.
Amidst comparisons and discussions about the low supply of condoms in Milan-Cortina, organizers have clarified that they are addressing the situation and will provide all athletes with the necessary facilities to ensure a safe and positive sports environment.
According to a report in the Daily Mail UK, 1,400 beds have been provided for athletes to stay at the Games Village in Milan. Banners have also been put up to raise awareness about the health of athletes, stating, "Health First: Prevention and Prudence."
The organizers had initially stocked 10,000 condoms in the Games Village, meaning each player could use two condoms daily. However, players used condoms so frequently and rapidly that they ran out within three days.
According to reports, an athlete told the Italian newspaper La Stampa, "The supply ran out within three days. Organizers say a new supply of condoms will arrive soon, but it's unclear when."
Interestingly, no separate arrangements have been made for players to have sex in the Games Village. Despite this, players have found a suitable place. According to reports, a "shoes-off relaxation room" has been created there. The room is dimly lit and soft music plays. It's being said that players overused this room to relax themselves.
Surprisingly, despite the abundance of sexual activity in the Games Village, the Canadian team was not impressed with the facilities. Seeking more privacy, they left the Games Village and moved to a five-star hotel, ensuring they would be more relaxed. Meanwhile, Games Village organizers are scrambling to secure a larger supply of condoms so that the snowy weather doesn't dampen their spirits.
It's worth noting that the free distribution of condoms in Olympic villages has been a long-standing practice. Its purpose is to promote safe sex and sexual health among athletes. Following this tradition, 300,000 condoms were distributed to athletes at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics.
