New Delhi: Delhi Police and lawyers' organisations have agreed to strengthen mutual cooperation and communication to prevent disputes, complaints and misunderstandings between police personnel and members of the legal profession.
The initiative aims to replace confrontation with dialogue, ensuring that differences are addressed through coordination before they escalate. Under the proposed arrangement, lawyers will be treated respectfully at police stations, while police personnel will receive the same courtesy within court premises.
The decision was taken at a joint meeting involving senior Delhi Police officers and representatives of the legal fraternity. Participants included members of the Bar Council of Delhi, the Coordination Committee of District Bar Associations and office-bearers of bar associations from various district courts.
Those present agreed that protecting citizens' rights, upholding the rule of law and strengthening the justice system are shared responsibilities of both the police and the legal community.
A joint coordination committee will be established to improve communication and address complaints and disputes within a defined timeframe. Coordination mechanisms will also be strengthened at the district level, while designated liaison officers will be appointed at the Delhi Police headquarters.
The meeting also agreed that, wherever possible, the relevant bar association should be informed if an FIR is registered against a practising advocate.
Bar associations will provide updated lists of their office-bearers and members to the respective district Deputy Commissioners of Police to facilitate better communication and verification.
Another key understanding was to ensure respectful treatment of advocates at police stations and police personnel in court complexes.
The proposed framework is intended to create a more structured channel for addressing grievances and avoiding unnecessary confrontations. Both sides emphasised that police officers and lawyers should not be viewed as rivals but as two important pillars of the justice delivery system.
The initiative seeks to build trust through regular interaction, institutional coordination and timely resolution of differences.
