New Delhi: Delhi's historic landscape is set to receive a modern makeover while retaining its cultural identity. The government is planning to redevelop Netaji Subhash Marg, a 3.3-kilometre stretch connecting Delhi Gate with Kashmere Gate, into an attractive and well-organised corridor equipped with improved public facilities.

The project is being planned by the Indraprastha Heritage Redevelopment Corporation under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The initiative aims to improve urban infrastructure while preserving the historical character of Old Delhi.

Pedestrians, Cyclists and Commuters to Get Better Facilities

Under the proposed redevelopment plan, the entire stretch will be divided into three sections for systematic development. The project includes wider footpaths, dedicated cycling tracks, bus lanes, vehicle corridors, organised parking spaces and attractive pedestrian plazas.

Plans also include modern public toilets and redesigned bus stops. Traffic management will be improved through better-organised intersections, road signage and safer pedestrian crossings.

The objective is to make the historic road more accessible and convenient for pedestrians, cyclists, public transport users and motorists.

Historic Monuments and Green Spaces to Be Connected

A key feature of the project is the proposed improvement of heritage sites and green spaces surrounding the corridor.

The redevelopment plan aims to connect 12 prominent locations, including the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, St. James' Church, Kashmere Gate, Subhash Park, Hindi Park, Agrasen Park and Sunehri Masjid.

The initiative is expected to create a more integrated heritage corridor, allowing residents and visitors to experience several important historical landmarks through improved public infrastructure.

Delhi Gate to Get a Dedicated Heritage Interpretation Park

A heritage interpretation park is also proposed near Delhi Gate. The planned development will feature a statue, an attractive pavilion, landscaped green spaces, seating arrangements and parking facilities.

The beautification plan further includes trees, flowering plants, green stretches and decorative lighting along both sides of the road to enhance the overall appearance of the corridor.

What Is the Government's Vision for the Project?

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the government is committed to expanding modern facilities without compromising Delhi's historical character and cultural identity.

She emphasised that development should enhance the dignity of the city's heritage rather than diminish its significance.

Through the proposed redevelopment, the government aims to bring together improved urban mobility, public convenience, green spaces and heritage conservation along one of Old Delhi's historically significant roads.
