Ramlila Celebrations and Delhi Traffic: Police Roll Out Mega Plan to Prevent Traffic Jams (TIN)

New Delhi:  Chants of Jai Shri Ram will echo on the stage of Ramlila, crowds of devotees will gather in the grounds and the speed of vehicles running on the roads of the capital will also remain intact. Delhi Traffic Police has geared up to save Delhi's roads from getting jammed amid the festive fervor. To strike a balance between the grandeur of Ramlila and the convenience of the general public, the traffic police has taken the initiative to prepare such a blueprint in which the celebration of faith will continue and the pace of Delhi will not stop.

To implement this strategy, Zone-1 of Delhi Traffic Police held a high-level coordination meeting with representatives of various Ramlila committees on Thursday in the conference room of Delhi Police Gazetted Officers Mess, Shamnath Marg, Civil Lines. The basic mantra of the meeting was clear – “Ramlila will also continue, Delhi will also continue.” That means there is no disturbance in the festival but there is no chaos on the roads either.

The meeting was organized under the guidance of Additional Police Commissioner Traffic Vijayanta Goyal Arya. In this, Deputy Commissioner of Police Eastern Range Shweta Chauhan and Deputy Commissioner of Police Central Range K Ramesh along with all the Assistant Police Commissioners of Zone-1, Traffic Inspectors and representatives of various Ramlila committees participated. Officials and organizers together discussed the challenges that common people may face during Ramlila due to increased movement of vehicles and unplanned parking.

Ramlila on stage, drama of jam will not happen on roads

In the meeting, Additional Police Commissioner Traffic gave a clear message that both the grandeur of religious events and the normal traffic system of the capital will have to be taken together. As important as the safety of the devotees coming to see Ramlila is, equally important is the convenience of office-going employees, students, local residents and other travelers. The police's emphasis was on the fact that traffic related problems should be solved not after the crowd gathers but by making preparations in advance. Special attention will be paid to the condition of roads around the venues, vehicular movement, availability of parking, safety of pedestrians and arrangement of alternative routes if needed.

Officials explained to the organizers that a few minutes of carelessness could lead to a jam several kilometers long. Therefore, it is very important to prepare a traffic management plan according to the local conditions of each Ramlila site, maintain direct contact between the responsible people and inform about the problems in time.

Solid parking arrangements, vehicle fair will not be held on the road

The biggest challenge during Ramlila is the parking of vehicles around the venues. People hastily park their vehicles on main roads, link roads, intersections or narrow streets. This not only affects traffic but can also hamper the movement of relief and rescue vehicles in case of emergency. To prevent this problem, special emphasis was laid on parking management in the meeting. Ramlila committees were expected to identify available spaces, inform visitors about designated parking and assist in orderly parking of vehicles with the help of volunteers.

The need to stop illegal parking on main roads, haphazardly parked vehicles and temporary activities blocking roads was also discussed. The objective is that the people coming to see Ramlila should not face any problem in parking their vehicles and the roads of other citizens should not be blocked due to them.

Crowd will be controlled, safety of pedestrians will also be monitored

There is a large movement of children, elderly, women and families at Ramlila sites. In such a situation, it is not enough to just control the vehicles, but the safety of pedestrians is also an important part of the traffic plan.

In the meeting, emphasis was laid on the entry and exit arrangements at the venue, movement of pedestrians and extra vigilance at places under crowd pressure. Organizers were asked to deploy adequate number of volunteers so that people can be guided in the right direction and unnecessary chaos can be prevented in time. The aim of the traffic police plan is to ensure that devotees can reach the Ramlila site without unnecessary hassle and return to their homes safely after the program is over.

There will be no obstruction in the way of ambulance and fire brigade

One of the most important aspects in traffic management during festivals is the uninterrupted movement of emergency services. It was clarified in the meeting that keeping the road open for ambulances, fire engines and other emergency response vehicles should be a priority. Unauthorized parking, temporary shops or other obstructions on the routes leading to the venue may delay relief in critical situations. Therefore, special emphasis was laid on maintaining better coordination between the organizers and the concerned traffic authorities and keeping the emergency routes free from obstructions. The message from the traffic police is clear—the arrangements during the festival should be such that if needed, help can reach the spot within a few moments.

Route will be changed if necessary, public will get alternative route

In view of the possibility of increased vehicular pressure on some routes during Ramlila, there was also discussion on making advance plans for alternative routes of traffic. Wherever necessary, according to local conditions, measures can be taken to divert traffic to other routes and maintain smooth movement of vehicles.

For this, the need for traffic inspectors and concerned officials to be in constant touch with the organizing committees was emphasized. Timely sharing of information and prompt resolution of problems arising on the spot will help in controlling the jam situation before it becomes serious. Local challenges of various areas of Zone-I were also discussed in the meeting. Officials cited area-wise planning, effective deployment of available police personnel and cooperation with organizing committees as the basis for better traffic management.

Organizers will also fulfill their responsibilities, volunteers will become companions of the system.

Delhi Traffic Police motivated the Ramlila committees to not just limit themselves to organizing the event but also to actively cooperate in the traffic management. Volunteers can help manage parking, provide directions to pedestrians, inform people about detours, and prevent road blockages.

It was also emphasized in the meeting that there should be direct communication between the organisers, traffic inspectors and senior officials. In case of increase in crowd at any place, queue of vehicles or parking problem, information should be shared immediately, so that necessary steps can be taken in time. This initiative of the traffic police is based on the thought that the success of big events is not only determined by the grandeur of the stage, but also by the safety of the visitors, convenience of the citizens and smoothness of the system.

Appeal to the public – follow the rules, do not invite traffic jams

Delhi Traffic Police has appealed to the organizers and the general public to use the designated parking spaces, avoid parking on main roads, follow traffic guidelines and cooperate with the police personnel on duty. People are also expected to pay attention to traffic information before reaching the venues and use suggested alternative routes if necessary. A little caution and following the rules can save thousands of people's time and reduce unnecessary stress on the road.

Respect for faith, convenience for citizens – this is the real system

This coordination meeting of Delhi Traffic Police Zone-I is an important step towards making advance preparations during festivals and making local organizers partners in the arrangements. The department reiterated its commitment to maintain a balance between the dignity of religious festivals, the safety of citizens and the normal functioning of the capital. Now the challenge is to implement this scheme effectively on the ground. The cooperation of the organizers, the discipline of the public and the vigilance of the traffic police can together ensure that cheers echo in the Ramlila grounds, there is happiness on the faces of the devotees and the problem of traffic jams on the roads of Delhi does not deepen.
