New Delhi: A fire that broke out in a restaurant in Kalkaji area of  Delhi in the early hours of Sunday engulfed the entire building. The fire spread so rapidly that 3 commercial LPG cylinders exploded. There was chaos in the area. It is a matter of relief that the fire department took out an elderly woman safely in time, due to which a major accident was averted.

Where and how did the fire start?

This accident happened at 'Punjabi Tadka' restaurant near Govindpuri flyover in Kalkaji. As soon as the fire was reported around 4:45 am on Sunday morning, the Delhi Fire Service team immediately reached the spot. Initially 6 fire engines were sent, but seeing the magnitude of the fire, more engines had to be called.

How many floors did the fire reach?

According to fire officials, the fire started from the basement and gradually reached the ground floor and third floor. The temporary structure built on the roof of the building also caught fire. Flames and smoke were visible from a distance.

What happened when the cylinder exploded?

While extinguishing the fire, three commercial LPG cylinders kept in the restaurant exploded. Hearing the sound of the explosion, nearby people came out of their houses. After the explosion, the fire flared up further, making the work more difficult for the firefighters.

How did 75-year-old Sita Devi survive?

75 year old Sita Devi was trapped on the second floor of the second building adjacent to the building that was on fire. There was dense smoke all around and the danger was increasing. Delhi Fire Service immediately started the rescue operation. Firefighters made a path through the smoke and pulled the woman out safely and saved her life.

How many teams were needed to extinguish the fire?

A total of 9 fire tenders were deployed to control the fire. This included water tender, water bowser, breathing support unit and multipurpose vehicle. The relief and rescue operation went on for hours under the supervision of many senior officers.

How is the situation now?

The fire department has completely controlled the fire. Right now the cooling operation is going on so that the fire does not flare up again. Police and related agencies are investigating the cause of the fire. At present there is no news of any major damage or loss of life or property. The administration has heaved a sigh of relief after the life of an elderly woman was saved. Such incidents increase with summer in Delhi. LPG cylinder and electrical short circuit remain the biggest risks.
