Jabalpur: A crucial hearing took place on Tuesday at the Madhya Pradesh High Court regarding a petition linked to the defamation case against Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi. The Bhopal MP-MLA Court submitted its response. Following this, the High Court scheduled a hearing for Wednesday to consider Rahul Gandhi's request for interim relief. The hearing will determine whether he is granted an exemption from appearing before the trial court or if he must be present for the proceedings.
The Bhopal MP-MLA Court had previously issued summons requiring Rahul Gandhi's personal appearance in the defamation case filed against him. Subsequently, Rahul Gandhi moved the High Court seeking an exemption from personal appearance. Following Tuesday's proceedings, the single bench of Justice Pramod Kumar Agrawal directed that the application be heard on Wednesday.
It is noteworthy that Kartikeya Singh Chouhan, son of former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, had filed a defamation complaint against Rahul Gandhi in the Bhopal MP-MLA Court. The complaint alleged that during an election rally in Jhabua in 2018, Rahul Gandhi mentioned the complainant's name while referring to the Panama Papers leak case, thereby damaging his reputation.
While hearing the matter, the MP-MLA Court had issued summons for Rahul Gandhi's personal appearance. Rahul Gandhi approached the High Court to challenge the defamation case and the summons issued by the lower court. During the proceedings, the High Court had asked the petitioner to produce the records from the subordinate court.
Rahul Gandhi had issued a clarification regarding the matter after mentioning Kartikeya Singh Chouhan's name. Rahul Gandhi had said that he wanted to mention the name of the then Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Raman Singh's son, but inadvertently mentioned the name of Kartikeya Chouhan.
