Chardham Yatra 2026: Green Cards for Commercial Vehicles Will Be Issued from Today (X)

Dehradun: The Transport Department has completed preparations for the Chardham Yatra. The process of issuing green cards for vehicles for the Chardham Yatra will begin on Monday in Haridwar and Rishikesh. State Transport Minister Pradeep Batra will launch the green card system at the Haridwar ARTO office.

Where will the Green cards be issued?

Green cards will be issued at the Asharodi checkpost in Dehradun, the ARTO offices in Vikasnagar, Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Roorkee.

However, starting April 15, green cards will be issued at the Narsan checkpost in Roorkee. The RTO (Administration) has instructed the ARTO (Administration) to process green cards transparently. In 2025, green cards were issued for approximately 32,000 commercial passenger vehicles.

The Chardham Yatra will begin with the opening of the doors of Yamunotri and Gangotri shrines on April 19, coinciding with Akshaya Tritiya.

The doors of Kedarnath shrine will open on April 22 and Badrinath shrine on April 23. Therefore, green cards will be issued for local vehicles before vehicles from outside states enter, so that local drivers don't have to wait in long queues.

What is the process?

Drivers must bring their vehicles with them to obtain a Green Card. Green Cards will only be issued if the vehicle's documents are complete. A technical inspection will also be conducted. If any deficiencies are found in the vehicle's fitness and technical inspection, the vehicle will be barred from obtaining a Green Card.

A technical team and a special administrative team have been deployed at all the offices and checkpoints where green cards will be issued. The RTO administration will be required to provide information on the number of green cards issued daily.

Will Transport Minister inaugurate Green Card counter in Haridwar?

State Transport Minister Pradeep Batra will inaugurate the Green Card counter at the Haridwar ARTO office. The Transport Department has completed preparations. The RTO administration has made QR code and UPI payment facilities available for commercial vehicle drivers.

To ensure transparency in the process of making green cards, funds will be directly transferred to the government treasury.

Rishikesh, Rawat Singh, Asst. Regional Transport Officer (Administration) said that green cards were originally scheduled to be issued on March 23, but due to some technical issues, the date had to be changed.

What is Green Card and why is it important?

Green card is actually a kind of proof, which ensures that the vehicle going on the journey is technically completely fit. Through this, the transport department maintains a record of every vehicle so that information can be obtained immediately in case of any emergency.

What rules will apply to which vehicles?

Vehicles with more than 12 seats coming from outside states will get a green card only for 15 days. Whereas for local vehicles of Uttarakhand, this card will be valid for six months. This time the rules have been made more strict so that both crowd and risk can be controlled.

What are the conditions for driver?

This time the rules have also been made strict for drivers. It is necessary to have "Hill Indoors" on the driver's license; that is, the driver should have experience driving on hilly roads. Apart from this, health tests and eye examinations of all the drivers will also be done.
