Mounted Gun System
National News: India's artillery systems are rewriting the rules of battlefield strategy. The Mounted Gun System (MGS) and Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) have given the Indian Army a new level of firepower and mobility. Developed under Make in India, both platforms are now not only strengthening India’s borders but gaining interest from foreign buyers. These systems represent technological self-reliance, reducing dependency on imports. India’s rise in the global arms market is no longer a distant dream.
Mounted Gun System (MGS) was conceptualized in 2018 and approved in 2019. Manufacturing began in 2021 and was completed by 2023. With a weight of 30 tons, it is tailor-made for swift mobility in active conflict zones. It can operate in deserts, plains, hills, and even water up to 1 meter deep. The system climbs 20-degree slopes and handles trenches up to 800 mm wide with ease.
The MGS can fire up to 46 kilometers with deadly accuracy. It fires 6 rounds per minute, enough to decimate a 50-square-feet area. Each shell weighs around 45 kg, and the vehicle stores 24 shells at once. Its post-fire relocation speed makes enemy counterattacks nearly impossible. With minimal setup time and rapid movement, it suits modern warfare demands perfectly.
This system is ready to fire within 80 seconds, drastically reducing combat response time. A crew of six handles its operations with precision and coordination. The driver's cabin is fully bulletproof, ensuring safety under hostile conditions. One fuel refill allows 400 km movement, and its generator works nonstop for 12 hours. Most importantly, its targeting system is fully computerized—just input coordinates and fire.
The ATAGS took nearly a decade of development and is 85% indigenous. Weighing 19.5 tons, it uses foreign technology in only 15% of its structure. It can fire 5 shells in a minute or 10 shells in 2.3 minutes. Its towing speed reaches 40 km/h, adding impressive mobility to its powerful punch. Firing accuracy stands at a near-flawless 0.6% error rate.
It takes just 2 minutes and 30 seconds to set up ATAGS for full-scale operation. This makes it a tactical asset in high-intensity scenarios. Whether in border defense or offensive missions, its readiness saves crucial minutes. With such accuracy and speed, the gun is future-ready. Indian soldiers now have a system they can rely on under pressure.
The Indian Army has ordered 307 units of ATAGS, marking it as a key part of future warfare. The first export consignment has already been delivered to Armenia, boosting India’s global defense footprint. With growing interest from Southeast Asia and Africa, India's artillery technology is now an export-ready asset. This strengthens India's position as a defense supplier. The world is now watching India's firepower evolution unfold.
