Puducherry Assembly Polls: Over 40% Candidates Are Crorepatis, Wealth Gap in Focus (OpenAi)

New Delhi: This time in the Puducherry Assembly elections, shocking figures have come to light regarding the assets of the candidates. Analysis of election affidavits has revealed that a large number of candidates are millionaires, raising questions over economic inequality and the role of 'money power' in elections. Statistics show that most of the candidates of many major political parties are crorepatis, which points to the changing nature of electoral politics.

Are the major parties dominated by crorepati candidates?

According to the data, the percentage of crorepati candidates in many big parties is very high. About 81% of Congress candidates are crorepatis, while in some parties this figure reaches 100%. All the candidates from BJP, AIRC and some other parties fall in the crorepati category, which further strengthens this trend.

Which parties have the richest candidates?

In terms of numbers, Congress has the maximum number of 17 crorepati candidates. After this, all 16 N.R. 16 candidates of Congress and 11 of DMK are crorepatis. This shows that the share of financially strong candidates is more in big parties.

Is the situation of small parties and independent candidates different?

This percentage appears slightly less in small parties and regional parties. In some parties this figure is between 30 to 50 percent. Among the independent candidates, about 28% are crorepatis, but in terms of numbers, 33 such candidates are in the fray.

Is the gap between poor and rich candidates increasing?

It is clear from the analysis that economic inequality is very high in the electoral field. On one hand, there are candidates with assets worth crores, while on the other hand, there are candidates contesting elections with limited resources. This raises questions on equal competition in elections.

Does this trend show a change in electoral politics?

Experts believe that these figures indicate that the role of money in elections is continuously increasing. Parties are giving priority to such candidates who can bear the election expenses and remain strong in the campaign.

How many candidates are crorepatis?

According to the report of Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), more than 40% of the total candidates are crorepatis. This figure shows that the influence of money in the electoral field has increased more than ever. According to the report, out of 291 candidates analyzed, 119 candidates have declared assets worth more than Rs 1 crore. That means approximately 41% candidates fall in the millionaire category.

Are the candidates' net worth shocking?

According to the report, the total declared assets of all the candidates are around Rs 2,099 crore. On an average, each candidate has assets worth around Rs 7.21 crore. This average indicates that the candidates contesting the elections are quite strong financially.

Who is the richest candidate?

According to the report, Jose Charles Martin, contesting from Kamaraj Nagar seat, is the richest candidate this time. He has declared assets worth more than Rs 609 crore. His wealth includes both movable and immovable properties, which puts him at the top in this election.

Which other candidates' names are in the top list?

Second in the list of richest candidates is Puducherry BJP president VP Ramalingam, whose declared assets are around Rs 115 crore. In third place was Home Minister A. Namassivayam, whose assets are said to be around Rs 85 crore.

Will it affect the voters?

Although the wealth of candidates is becoming an important factor, the final decision lies in the hands of the voters. Now it will be interesting to see whether the public gives priority to development and issues or the economic strength of the candidates.
