Tamil Nadu: A major turning point in Tamil Nadu politics came when Congress decided to help form the government by supporting Vijay's party TVK. Along with this, questions are also being raised on the long-standing alliance of Congress and DMK. TVK emerged as the largest party in the assembly elections by winning 108 seats but fell 10 seats short of the majority figure of 118. In such a situation, the support of Congress has made the path of government formation easier.

Why did DMK call it 'stabbing in the back'?

DMK seemed quite angry over this decision of Congress. Party spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai said the Congress has “betrayed” the people of Tamil Nadu and their mandate. He said that after fighting the elections together, now going with TVK is like breaking the public trust.

DMK leaders believe that the public had voted for the opposition alliance together; hence, choosing a different path after the elections does not give the right message.

How did Karti Chidambaram respond to DMK's allegations?

Congress leader Karti Chidambaram termed DMK's allegations unfortunate. Speaking to India Today TV, he said that some people are not able to understand the politics of a post-poll alliance.

He said that it is common in democracy for parties with different ideologies to come together to form the government after elections. Giving the example of European politics, he said that sometimes opposition parties also come together to provide a stable government.

Will MK Stalin understand this decision?

Karti Chidambaram is confident that DMK chief M. K. Stalin is an old and wise leader; he will understand this political environment very well. Karti said that there is nothing surprising in this; it is just a natural part of politics.
He also made it clear that the real effort of Congress is to give a strong and secular government to Tamil Nadu. His argument was simple: if no one supports after the elections, how will the government be formed?

What is TVK doing now to form the government?

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam is now busy gathering support from other small parties so that the majority mark can be crossed easily. It is believed that Congress may soon hold a press conference and formally announce its decision.

This new equation in Tamil Nadu politics can bring bigger changes in the coming days.
