Raksha Bandhan 2026 Date: Is Rakhi on August 27 or 28? Check the Correct Date & Shubh Muhurat (OpenAi)
New Delhi: The festival of Rakshabandhan will be celebrated this time on 28th August. This festival of brother-sister relationship is celebrated every year on the full moon day of Sawan, but this time due to the full moon date falling on two dates, there is confusion among the people about 27th and 28th August. The Purnima Tithi will start on the morning of 27th August and will last till the morning of the next day. Rakshabandhan will be celebrated on 28th August based on Udaya Tithi.
According to the Hindu calendar, the full moon date of Shravan month will start on 27 August 2026 at around 9.08 am. This date will last till around 9.48 am on 28th August. Since Purnima Tithi will be present at the time of sunrise on 28th August, the date has been fixed as per the tradition of celebrating Rakshabandhan on this day.
Morning time is considered especially auspicious for tying Rakhi on 28th August. According to the Panchang, the time for tying Rakhi will be from 5.57 am to 9.48 am. During this time, sisters can tie Rakhi on brother's wrist. However, due to difference in sunrise time in different cities, slight variation in Muhurta is possible.
This time a situation of lunar eclipse is also being created around Rakshabandhan. For this reason, many people have a question in their mind whether the eclipse affect the festival of Rakhi. According to astronomical calculations, this eclipse will not be visible in India. In such a situation, there is no special concern for the people living in India regarding the eclipse.
The conditions at which an eclipse is visible depend on the location from where the astronomical phenomenon can be seen. This time the lunar eclipse will not be visible from India. Therefore, in general, it will not have any direct impact on the worship and process of tying Rakhi on the day of Rakshabandhan. However, people following religious beliefs may prefer the advice of their local Panchang and Pandit.
Rakshabandhan is considered the festival of love and mutual trust between brothers and sisters. On this day, sister applies Tilak to her brother and ties Rakhi and wishes for his happy life. The brother also takes a pledge to protect the sister and stand by her in every difficult time. There has been a change in the way of celebrating festivals with time, but the importance of brother-sister relationship still remains the same.
There are many religious and folk stories related to Rakshabandhan. Among these, the story of Lord Shri Krishna and Draupadi is told the most. It is believed that when Shri Krishna's finger got injured, Draupadi tore the cloth of her saree and tied it on his finger. It is said that after this Shri Krishna promised to protect Draupadi. This story related to Mahabharata shows the feeling of affection and security in the brother-sister relationship.
On Rakshabandhan, sisters prepare puja thali with Rakhi. Roli or kumkum, akshat, lamp, sweets and rakhi are kept in it. Rakhi is tied after applying tilak to the brother and performing aarti. After this the brother gives a gift to his sister. Many families also have a tradition of making special dishes and sweets at home on this day.
Amidst the ongoing confusion regarding the date, according to the calendar, this year Rakshabandhan will be celebrated on Friday, August 28, 2026. Morning time will be auspicious for tying Rakhi. Since the lunar eclipse is not visible in India, generally it is not considered to be any hindrance in organising Rakshabandhan. There may be a slight difference in the Muhurta according to local tradition and city almanac.
