Patna: A video of Janata Dal (United) MLA Anant Singh smoking a cigarette inside a hospital in Patna's Bihar is doing the rounds on social media, drawing sharp criticism over the conduct of the ruling party legislator.

What is Anant Singh doing in the video?

According to reports, the footage, which captures Singh openly smoking while surrounded by supporters and police personnel, was recorded at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna, where he was taken for medical examinations.

The jailed politician had visited the hospital from the Beur lockup for a regular checkup when the incident took place.

The viral clip has raised serious questions about prison parole, misuse of medical bail, and adherence to hospital rules by influential leaders.

What did RJD say about the video?

The viral clip has ignited a political debate in Bihar, as the opposition in the state is now attacking Nitish Kumar government.

RJD national spokesperson Ejaz Ahmed  questioned whether laws apply selectively in Bihar. “Does the ban on smoking not hold inside hospitals?” he asked, directly targeting the BJP-JDU alliance.

Taking a jibe at the JD(U) MLA, RJD's national spokesperson, Priyanka Bharti, said, "Nayak Nahi, Khalnayak hai tu."

Taking to X, she wrote, "Nayak Nahi, Khalnayak hai tu. Anant Singh, blowing good governance up in smoke. Nitish ji’s pampered villain is making reels while smoking a cigarette in the hospital!”

What is JD (U) MLA accused of?

Anant Kumar Singh, aka Chhote Sarkar, arrested in connection with the supporter of the Jan Suraaj Party, Dular Chand murder case, which surfaced just ahead of the 2025 Assembly elections, is currently lodged in Beur Jail.  

Despite being behind bars, he contested the 2025 Bihar Assembly Elections from the Mokama constituency and emerged victorious.
